This page has not been updated since early 2015, and is incomplete!

See the Transition to OWL3 Word Lists on the Study Tools page for printable word lists and cheat sheets using the new words.

Look for +OWL3 which indicates that the list/link has been updated to include the new words.

This page was created to help with the transition from OWL2/OSPD4 to OWL3/OSPD5. OSPD5 was released 6 August 2014, and OWL3 (OTCWL2014) was available starting August 8th (in Buffalo). For starters, I used OSPD5 (cloth-bound edition) as a source, but began cross-checking OWL3 once I got a physical copy (August 18th).

I am also making extensive use of the Merriam-Webster Scrabble Word Finder website (click Tournament Mode and use your NASPA login to access the full list). Warning: after a few minutes of using the website, it will arbitrarily log you out of Tournament Mode so your results will change. Just be sure you are still in Tournament Mode when you are using the tool. Also: as of March 2015 the online MW tool still does NOT incorporate the Errata (e.g., DISREPECTS is still in there, and WRINKLIES is not).

This is definitely a work in progress. Please email any comments, corrections, or suggestions to Rebecca.

Thank you to the many people who have sent me feedback on this page. I appreciate all the suggestions and corrections, and am working to incorporate them in a timely manner.

Status Update for this Page

14 March 2015
Have shifted from updating this page to updating the lists on the Study Tools page to include words from OWL3. So, look there for the Cheat Sheet mentioned below, as well as other printable lists with the new words, definitions, etc.
Look for   +OWL3 which indicates that the list/link has been updated to include the new words.

15 February 2015
Updated CheatSheet with more complete list of new Expurgated Words. Updated Expurgated Words page (and link to it instead of having duplicate list below.

14 February 2015
This page has been updated to incorporate the Official Errata for OTCWL2014 (OWL3). You can also see the details of the official errata below.

13 February 2015
Beginning Tuesday, February 17th, we will start allowing the use of the new words at club. Because the new words do not officially go into effect until April 10th, players will be allowed to use and refer to the OWL3 Cheat Sheet [DRAFT] at club during the transition period. Players will also get free challenges for new words (i.e., you will not lose a challenge if one of the words being challenged is new to OWL3).

10 February 2015
With the release of an updated version of Zyzzyva that includes the new words (a.k.a.: OWL3 or OTCWL2014) this past weekend, NASPA has announced that the official date for using the new word list in clubs and tournaments is April 10th.
You can download the new version (3.0.3) of Zyzzyva from the NASPA website. The new words are only available to current NASPA members. Please direct any questions about the new words or the new Zyzzyva to NASPA.

20 December 2014
Please note that this page has NOT YET been updated include NASPA's Official Errata. I plan to update this page with those errata after Seattle's January 24th one-day tournament. NASPA still has not yet announced a date for the new word list to go into effect, but since they have said it will be at least 60 days after an update to Zyzzyva (that will restrict access to the new list), we can presume it will be no earlier than March April of 2015. Happy New Year!

22 October 2014
NASPA sent an email message to members announcing a "final list of corrections" to OWL3. The Official Errata is available as a printable pdf to NASPA members only, with 40 additions to OWL3 and 47 deletions from the list. There is no mention of the hundreds of discrepancies between OSPD5 and OWL3, or when the new words will go into effect.

26 September 2014
NASPA originally announced that the new words (OWL3) would go into effect December 1st, 2014. However, on September 25th, NASPA sent email announcing that the effective date was no long December 1st, but they declined to give a new date. The only thing they did confirm was that new new words "will not become official until two months after we make the Zyzzyva study program available for NASPA members." No mention was made about the errors in the list or how or when they would be corrected, or how soon they think Zyzzyva will be available.

In light of this uncertainty and delay, I have stopped updating this page for the time being (actually, I stopped updating it around September 10th in prepration for the Portland v. Seattle challenge - go Team Seattle!). I'll come back to it when we get a firm date from NASPA, or when I decide to implement the corrections sent to me. Thanks!

Discrepancies Between OWL3 and OSPD5

Deleted Words

NASPA website states that "No words have been deleted", but the following words that were in OSPD4 are not in OSPD5:

  • BALDY and BALDIES  appears to have been omitted in error (it was in OSPD4 and OWL2 and is still in OWL3), also the new BALDIE is only in OWL3. please don't tell me that they expurgated this.
  • EXUVIUM   omitted by error? it is acceptable on the MW website and is in OWL3
  • JAILBAIT   now expurgated?   JAILBAIT and JAILBAITS (new) are both acceptable on MW website and in OWL3
  • UMTEENTH   appears to have been omitted in error (it was in OSPD4 and OWL2 and is still in OWL3)

Errata

We posted a printable OSPD4 Errata Sheet back in 2006. In reviewing OSPD5 with those omissions/errors in mind, it appears that most of the trademark words added in the last update that were omitted from OSPD4 are still NOT in OSPD5 (probably intentionally omitted by MW/Hasbro so as not to weaken the trademark status of those words). However there are still quite a few non-trademarked omissions.

The table below lists the words omitted from OSPD4 that should have been added, and that are still not printed in OSPD5 (along with some notes). Note that all of these words were good in OWL2.

Additionally, the following words were printed in OSPD4 but should NOT have been, and have also been printed in OSPD5. It's not clear at this point if these words were erroneously printed again, or if they were intentionally included.

  • EXEDRAS - [was an erroneous plural of EXEDRA; is it good now?]   MW Scrabble online says EXEDRAS is good
  • UMBELULE(s) - [the correct spelling according to MW online is still just UMBELLULE(s), which was good in OWL2 (and was what the errata for OSPD4 had replace the incorrectly included UMBELULE(s), but the MW Scrabble website and OWL3 says that UMBELULE and UMBELULES are both good. This appears to be an error]

There was a very short errata sheet for OWL2. A few of the words erroneously printed in OWL2 are listed as acceptable on the MW website.

  • GODAMNDEST - [OWL2 errata listed this as to be deleted from the printed OWL2 and replaced by GODDAMNDEST; MW Scrabble online says it is good. This appears to be an error (especially since all variant spellings start with GODDA-). This is printed in OWL3]
  • WEAPONEERED - [OWL2 errata listed this as to be deleted from the printed OWL2;   OWL3 and MW Scrabble online says it is good. WEAPONEERING was good already, listed as an adjective. Was this intentional or an error?]

Possible Errors in OSPD5 and/or OWL3

The following list of words were not printed in OSPD5 but the MW website says they are acceptable. Some may have been omitted from the printing unintentionally, but others appear to have been erroneously included in OWL3. (See also Errata above listing words erroneously omitted from OSPD4 that are still not printed in OSPD5)
